Το Πολιτιστικό Κέντρο Αφρικανικής Τέχνης και Πολιτισμών ANASA, σε συνεργασία με το Μουσείο Μπενάκη και με την υποστήριξη του Οργανισμού Πολιτισμού και Ανάπτυξης ΝΕΟΝ, διοργανώνει την ομαδική αναδυόμενη (pop-up) έκθεση σύγχρονης τέχνης με τίτλο «Αναζητώντας τη Θεά». Η έκθεση θα παρουσιάζεται στους χώρους της έκθεσης «Η Αφρική Ανάμεσά μας*» στο Μουσείο Μπενάκη/Πειραιώς 138, στο πλαίσιο των παράλληλων δράσεων, από τις 3 Απριλίου έως τις 4 Μαΐου 2025. Έξι Έλληνες καλλιτέχνες αφρικανικής καταγωγής τίθενται σε μια συλλογική καλλιτεχνική αναζήτηση της Θεάς. Με αφορμή την ιστορία της αναβίωσης της εμβληματικής θεάς των Ζουλού Nomkhubulwane, μετά το τέλος του απαρτχάιντ στη Νότια Αφρική, οι καλλιτέχνες/ιδες κάνουν το δικό τους νοητό ταξίδι αναζήτησης ενός συμβόλου γυναικείας δύναμης που εδράζει στις ατομικές και συλλογικές τους μνήμες. Οι καλλιτέχνες/ιδες παρατηρώντας τον αγώνα των izangoma, των ιερειών της Nomkhubulwane, να επαναφέρουν τη Θεά στο λαό τους, ακολουθούν διαφορετικά μονοπάτια ο καθένας και η καθεμία. Διατηρούν όμως ένα κοινό σημείο συνάντησης. Το σημείο αυτό είναι ένας τόπος δομημένος από ζωγραφικά έργα και εγκαταστάσεις. Ένας τόπος που αποδίδεται καλύτερα με τα λόγια της Audre Lorde: «Αυτός ο γυναικείος τόπος, όπου φωλιάζει η δύναμη, δεν είναι ούτε λευκός ούτε κοντά στην επιφάνεια. Είναι σκοτεινός, είναι αρχέγονος, είναι βαθύς».

Exhibition: SEARCHING FOR THE GODDESS

Anasa Cultural Center in collaboration with the Benaki Museum, with the support of NEON Organization for Culture and Development, organize the pop-up group contemporary art exhibition titled “Searching for the Goddess”. The exhibition will be showcased within the spaces of the exhibition “Africa Amongst us*”, as part of the parallel events, at the Benaki Museum/Pireos 138, from April 3 until May 4, 2025. Six Greek artists of African descent set out on a collective artistic exploration of the Goddess. Inspired by the story of Nomkhubulwane, the Zulu goddess’s revival after the end of apartheid in South Africa, the artists embark on an imaginative journey to seek a symbol of feminine power rooted in their individual and collective memories. This symbol is delivered to us embodied in their artistic creations. The artists observe the struggle of izangoma, the diviners of Nomkhubulwane, to bring the goddess back to their people and each of them follow different paths to reach a common meeting point. This point structured by paintings and installations seems to be a topos which is better expressed in the words of Audre Lorde: “The woman’s place of power within each of us is neither white nor surface; it is dark, it is ancient, and it is deep.”

SEARCHING FOR THE GODDESS
DESCRIPTION
“Searching for the Goddess” is a contemporary art group exhibition, curated by Michael Afolayan (Founder of ANASA Organization) and Sophia Xenelli (Art Historian and Museologist) that aims to create a platform for expression and dialogue, exploring themes related to African cultures and histories. “Searching for the Goddess” offers Greek artists of African descent an opportunity to communicate both their personal and artistic identity, while also reflecting the collective narratives embedded within them.
The inspiration for this artistic journey stems from the story of the Zulu goddess Nomkhubulwane and the traditional healers izangoma chosen by her to protect the community and maintain its balance. Between 1996 and 1998, the women of Bulwer in South Africa revived the rituals and annual festivals dedicated to the goddess. They sought to reconnect with a deity long buried under a daily life shaped by colonial rule and apartheid politics. These women, as modern-day diviners who continue to uphold their cultural identity, strengthened community bonds and bridged the past with the present.
The participating artists were invited to reflect on this story and search for their own Goddess. Immersing themselves in personal and collective memories, they guide us through fictional and existing spaces filled with human stories. Through paintings and installations, we witness how the role of the healer extends to the artist, who transcends the boundary between the material and immaterial world. By realizing their creative vision and connecting past and present, they invite us into a space where tradition meets contemporary expression.
