To this day, the exact attributes of the deity remain unclear, mainly due to the misinterpretations of missionaries who documented African religious systems during the colonial period. The path towards understanding the Zulu religious system and, in particular, Nomkhubulwane, was paved by the social anthropologist Harriet Ngubane. Through her research, she demonstrated that Nomkhubulwane is a female deity (as even her gender was disputed), a conclusion she based on the &#8220;No&#8221; prefix in her name, which signifies a feminine marker in the Zulu language. This was further reinforced by continuous Zulu references to the deity as <em>inkosazane yezulu<\/em>, meaning &#8220;princess of the heavens.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>One approach towards realizing \u00a0the nature of the goddess suggests that Nomkhubulwane is the goddess of fertility and insight, strongly associated with maintaining the balance between the world of the living and the spiritual world. She is believed to reside near any source of water, with the rainbow being her most recognizable symbol.<\/p>\n<p>After the end of apartheid and the election of Nelson Mandela, the search for cultural heritage, marginalized during colonialism, gained the opportunity to evolve and expand beyond academic research. In 1995, Patience Gugu Ngobese (Nomagugu) had the idea of reviving the annual festivals dedicated to Nomkhubulwane\u2014an idea that, as she claimed, came to her in a dream, in the same way Nomkhubulwane was believed to communicate with her diviners, known as <em>izangoma<\/em> (plural of <em>isangoma<\/em>). This process of reclaiming Zulu cultural heritage was documented by anthropologist and author K. Limakatso Kendall, who described this effort as &#8220;a struggle to return the Zulu goddess back to her people,&#8221; emphasizing the role of the <em>izangoma<\/em> in this struggle.<\/p>\n<p>Through the narratives collected by Kendall from locals, we understand that many of the hardships faced by their society are attributed to their estrangement from the goddess. A common belief emerges that misfortune does not stem solely from malicious acts but rather from the distancing of divine spirits from the community due to neglect. Particularly striking is the testimony of Mabi to Kendall, when she mentioned that she had encountered Nomkhubulwane as a rain goddess in her research. Shocked, he responded: <em>&#8220;As if we have a different goddess for everything! Yes, she can bring the rain. Yes, she brings fertility. And yes, she can become very angry when people turn away from her. But she is not just a rain goddess! She is the daughter of God! His only daughter! There is only one goddess! Inseparable from God himself. She is the feminine side of God. She is God. She is Nomkhubulwane!&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Following collective research and discussions within the community about Nomkhubulwane, the first modern festival in her honor took place in 1996 in Bulwer, in the KwaZulu-Natal province. Since then, festivals dedicated to her continue, with various adaptations reflecting contemporary times. A key aspect of these festivals is the role of the <em>izangoma<\/em>, who now serve as mediators not only between the world of the living and the spirits, the material and the immaterial, but also as intermediaries between the past and the present.
